Good nutrition across the lifespan is one of the key messages at KWHB.  Healthy behaviors can reduce the number of people with chronic diseases and illnesses related to poor nutrition.  It is important that KWHB reinforces nutrition messages and provides a supportive environment for staff, clients and guests to access healthy foods and drinks.

Nutrition is an important factor in the development of chronic disease.  Research shows that twice as many indigenous people living in remote areas suffer from chronic disease (including diabetes, kidney disease and heart disease) than indigenous people living in urban areas.

Nutrition programs are needed to provide for education and prevention of chronic conditions. Nutrition programs need to be developed that engage and empower the community in all steps of program development.  Nutrition programs in Katherine West communities need to include developing healthy policy, strengthen community action, create supportive environments for people to make sustainable healthy choices, develop personal skills so that individuals have awareness of the link between food and health and the skills to make healthy choices and develop supports and processes to increase the capacity of the health service to deliver nutrition information.

We Focus on populations and sub-groups, not individuals’ dietary needs.

KWHB’s key message with regard to our Nutrition, Food Supply and Physical Activity Project, is primary prevention through ensuring access to healthy food and improving nutrition of the population. To achieve this, we:

1. Train and support community-based workers

2. Raise awareness, health promotion and nutrition education

3. Monitor and advocate for improved food supply
